Imperialism can be defined as a policy adopted by a nation which has to do with using power to assert authority over other territories. This is generally done through the process of territorial acquisition.

After acquiring the territory, the state takes over control of the political and economical system. This is an imperialist state, and the people are said to be living under an imperialist rule.

In such a rule, the resources of the acquired territory are often exploited by the state for its own benefits. This sort of aggression is regarded immoral by most states nowadays. Followers of Karl Marx and his ideology claim that imperialism is practiced by the United States of America to safeguard the foreign markets of their large businesses.

During the 15th to the 18th century, some nations like England, France, Portugal built empires in countries like India and territories in the east Indies, and established an imperialist rule.
