A speech choir piece is a piece of writing, often a poem, that can be performed vocally but rather than being sung in a traditional choir manner, it is spoken with theatrical effect. The themes of peace and war are often used because they have the capacity for the emotions that are necessary for these kinds or performances.

Very often when people think of choirs the first thing that springs to mind are church choirs. The atmosphere and acoustics that can be found in a church are conducive to people raising their voices in a spiritual manner, and whilst there is an abundance of church choirs, they cannot claim exclusivity.

Obviously, the first requirement of singing in a choir is being able to sing, hold a tune and having some tone. Naturally, these qualities are essential for choir members whatever it is they sing, but performing choral speech pieces exposes the voice even more because it has to achieve a different skill. There needs to be passion and emotion in the voice that is usually associated with acting, but the voice also needs timbre and to be captivating.

If you fancy the idea of joining a choir, and believe that you have what it takes, you will need to do some research into what is local to you. If the church choir has no appeal, have a look in your local paper and see what performances are coming up. You could go along to listen so that you can discover for yourself exactly what kinds of things they do, and if you like what you hear, you can make arrangements to see the choir master.
