Dictatorship is a form of government that has absolute power over a country or state. Dictatorship is practiced by one absolute ruler called the dictator. Dictators were also called tyrants by the ancient Romans. Although we hear less about dictatorship these days, dictators do exist. There are many dictators who are practicing dictatorship over many countries. Some examples of modern dictators are: Al Zarqawi (Iraq), Suharto (Indonesia), Osama Bin Laden (worldwide) and many more.

There are various kinds of dictatorship, but of course the one common factor is that the people are not allowed to vote the dictator out. Most work through a combination of fear, effective use of spying so that the leader always knows which of the people are likely to cause trouble, and giving the nation a certain amount of what they want. In some dictatorships the people are given some security and a better standard of living, so there is less likelihood of a revolt - in others the main control method is fear.
