Mahatma Gandhi's real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The name Mahatma means 'Great soul' in Hindi. He was born in 1969 and lived until 1948 and was an internationally respected spiritual and nationalist leader in India. Although his reputation is as a very simple man, he was well educated and a lawyer by profession.
Gandhi was a champion of the poor and disenfranchised throughout the world, but particularly in India, but he believed passionately that peaceful means should be used to try to get the British out of India. For this he was frequently imprisoned by the British although he was invited to a Round Table Conference held in 1931 to try to decide the future of the country.
After the Second World War ended in 1945, Gandhi was central in negotiating full independence for India.
He was killed by a Hindu extremist who opposed Gandhi's stance of supporting both Muslims and Hindus.
