South Africa gained independence from the suzerainty of Great Britain in 1910, although it became a full-blooded democracy after abolition of apartheid in 1994, when people got freedom from the minority white rule based on racially biased limited suffrage.

The website given above has misinformation. Please do not use it as as source for this answer. The British did not come to South Africa in 1652, it was the Dutch and the British did not arrive for settlement until the 1800's.
