Yes, he did.

I have personally checked all of the following quotes and they are legitimate...

From Dreams from My Father:  'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.' (Introduction, p. Xv)

From Dreams from My Father:  'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.' (Page 142)

From Dreams from My Father:  ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on , to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names. (Page 101)

From Dreams from My Father:  'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.' (page 220)

From Audacity of Hope:  'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' (page 261)

Actual quote from Page 261: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Or to make a long story short. When push comes to shove, a choice between Muslims and the security of the nation... he will choose the Muslims.

From page 220....why would anyone want to be like malcolm x? Seems a little racist to me. I think we all know where hussein stands on the muslim issue don't we??? PS. Not only is hussein a name only given to muslims, but both barack and obama are muslim decent as well.

Actually, page 261 says: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. For the correct versions of each of these quotes above -- all of which are taken out of context -- see snopes.com: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/ownwords.asp.

I've read Audacity of Hope and found the above paragraph from page 261 too. It was written in 2006, but wonder if Obama maybe originally wrote Muslims and then changed it to Arabs and Pakistanis. Since you, Bill, wrote Muslims, do you know if this is perhaps true?

I've read Audacity of Hope. Since you, Bill, say Obama refers to Muslims on page 261 and it says Arabs and Pakistani Americans, do you know that perhaps originally Obama had Muslims put in there then changed it to it's present statement?

Briefly, the summary from Fact Check, and you can read a more indepth article on this on their website:

No. A widely circulated e-mail fabricates some quotes from Obama's books and twists others.

Anyone looking for Barack Obama's real sentiments about whites, blacks and Muslims won't find them in this scurrilous collection of falsified, doctored and context-free "quotations." The e-mail claims to feature words taken from Obama's books, "The Audacity of Hope" (2006) and "Dreams from My Father" (1995, republished in 2004). But we found that two of the quotes are false, and others have been manipulated or taken out of context.

We have received many inquiries about this from readers whose suspicions were aroused, with good reason. Aside from the fact that the e-mail incorrectly cites the title of Obama's book as "Dreams of My Father," rather than "Dreams from My Father," you may have noticed that none of the quotes in this e-mail contain page references. This should be a sign to any reader that the author is trying to pull a fast one, betting that you won't take the time to read through all 806 pages of Obama's books to get to the facts.

On second thought.. it is easier and clearer if I simply add them to the original post.

Bill, I read a great deal but for someone to suggest I read through someone's book, all 806 pages, just to get the facts is a stretch. Will rely on the word of a person who hasn't led me astray yet. Noticed once the page numbers were inserted there has not been a reply. Love the out of context remark as I've even run across it on this site in a different instance. A means of complicating the issue when things prior to that point were perfectly black and white.

Read the entire page posted above! When you don't read the entire page, you are taking the one sentence out of context.
He is saying he will stand by muslim Americans if someone trys to put them in interment camps the way they did to Japanese amercians during world war 2.

Actually this nation isn't just a christian nation, it does have muslims. We actually have millions of them...I would know, I am one.  And I, and most muslim americans are very patriotic and supportive of our nations policies and freedom.
