The Middle Atlantic colonies were called the "Breadbasket Colonies" because of all the wheat.  They were the main suppliers.

The middle Atlantic region spans from New York, to the east of the Appalachian Mountains and to south Virginia. It is also known as the New England. The middle Atlantic colonies were popularly known as the breadbasket colonies due to the vast yield and import of grains.

New England faces a cold and dry climate, with conditions changing within the region. Though there is a network of water bodies, the climatic conditions always resulted in a bad crop. However, farmers of the middle Atlantic colonies, often grew enough food to feed their own families as well as those of others.

The farmers cashed in on crops like oats, wheat, barley, corn and rye. The yield and import of these crops was so high that the middle Atlantic colonies came to be known as breadbasket colonies.
