The colonists wanted independence from Britain because of many reasons. The British is taxing the colonists without anyone representing them. The British closing down the Boston harbor angered the colonist even more. The Boston Massacre also made the colonist wanting independence. The British soldiers killing 5 colonists angered the colonists. These are factors leading to the colonists wanting independence.

For a number of reasons, but it really became heated when Britain raised their taxes (because they were in debt after the Seven Years War) to keep troops stationed in the Thirteen Colonies.

But the Thirteen Colonies were deeply upset by this. They said that Britain had no right nor any authority to tax them, because they were not allowed to elect representatives to speak for them to British parliament. Their slogan was "No taxation without representation."

These protests eventually turned into a rebellion. I personally think that the influence from the United States also influenced their want for independence.

Mainly because of taxation without representation. That means to be taxed unfairly without being able to elect representatives to speak for you. They believed the representatives they had weren't representing them properly and they weren't even able to choose their representative. Plus, they were being taxed heavily. Therefore, they got fed up and decided they wanted to become independent.

There was a lot of heterogeneity in the population of the 13 colonies and they had a lot of differences mainly related to political views and also in attitude. The people of the different regions were loyal to different groups and it was becoming more and more difficult to remain under the rule of Great Britain. It was emphasized that the only solution to the problem of the people was to get independence from the British rule. For this purpose, a pamphlet was also published with the title “Common Sense”. It urged that the colonies should become independent.
