There were no cars then so horses were the mode of transportation. Lots and lots of horses were used in the war effort. Read that some wagon trains were 30 miles long. A canon would require 6 horses just to pull it, wagons 2 to 4 horses.In the South a person had to have his own horse in order to join the calvery.
