The scale of important events which have happened so far in the 21st century can be attributed to one starting date: September 11 2001. The start of the 21st century marked the start of a decade where terrorism would become a part of everyone’s everyday life, a major part of the news agenda and something which ten years later is still very much in society’s focus. Since the attack of the Twin Towers in New York, USA on this day, the world has been on high alert. Wars in Iraq and still in Afghanistan have claimed lives, dictator Saddam Hussein faced the death penalty, the terror moved to the British side of the Atlantic resulting in the 7/7 bombings on the London Underground, which led to the panic shooting of innocent man Jean Charles de Menezes. The headlines were in an uproar once again. Years later, in the month of April as the world watched the future King and Queen of England make their wedding vows to each other, special US troops in Pakistan were carefully staking out the hiding place of America’s most wanted criminal, the terrorist behind the terror which has engulfed the first decade of the 21st century: Osama Bin Laden. Days after the most anticipated nuptials were said and done, news of Bin Laden’s death brought the world to a state of high alert once more; now is the fear that vengeance repercussions will dominate the headlines again and the second decade of the new millennium will be not much different from the first.
