Originally buried in 1821 on the island of St. Helena in the south Atlantic, his remains were returned to France in 1840. His remain were interred in St Jerome's Chapel in Paris in 1840 and in 1861 Napoleon was moved to his present location under the dome at Les Invalides in Paris.
