Some Patricians using the class hatred of the Plebes for Patricians to their advantage to gain power. Caesar, and many other of his type were of the Populares Party. Which feigned  support for the poor to get elected to office. Then, the army came under control of one personality after another so that the army illegally entered Rome many times to enforce the will of the dictator of the moment.
