Well the only thing i can think of is herod thought Jesus was here to take his kingdom from him as the King of the jews.he ordered the death of all baby boys 2 years of age and younger so he thought he had got rid of the child that was to be born to be the king of the jews.

A lot of people didnt like Jesus because of what he preached but Herod had no problems with anyone, he was all about drinking, partys and women. His wife was the one who disliked everybody and it was her that made her husband put the order to behead John the Baptist. Watch that movie Jesus of Nazareth, its long but tells the whole story.

According to the myth, King Herod had heard a prediction that a king would be born that would become the leader of the Jews. He had every male child killed, thinking that he could stop the prediction from coming true. However the child and his parents had traveled to another city to pay their taxes, and missed the slaughter. He got a second chance to kill the adult "king of the Jews" and took it.

Because he incorrectly believed that Jesus was coming to become a temporal leader of the Jews and was going to take away his kingdom.
