On the individual level ... There's not really that much more "bad stuff" happening than in past eras. But you hear more about it due to the widespread availability and use of communication technology.
EG: In the 1940's, you wouldn't hear about a nutcase killing someone in a robbery halfway across the country - but now, it's instantly on social media.
