The FBI has dropped it's case against Apple after finding a way into the locked iPhone5c of the terrorists in California. Should the FBI reveal how they did this? (A securities firm in Israel is rumored to have helped them.)

No, they should not, nor do I expect they will. Why would the feds compromise their hard-won method, or give criminals a free roadmap to steal personal information.

If the method became public, no doubt Apple would create an update to counter it. Perhaps its already in the works.

@Z- I have been researching this for a while now and there are several methods of locking the phone (I have mine locked too) -they must have had an extended alphanumeric code (instead of the usual 4 digit numerical) on their phone since the 5c doesn't take fingerprint lock. Also not sure if these terrorists did the IOS update on their phone.. leaving the iPhone 5c one of the easiest to unlock -but they still couldn't get into it. I side found out how to make sure my phone was better locked from Apple so that information is sure out there, but it always was-just took some work to look up ....but it's not like I am someone who needs to lock their phone or hide I do from the FBI. Anyway the point I am getting to is that if the FBI releases how they did it with this company in Israel, they said Apple will just make software for people to use to fix that bug and unlocking it will be next to impossible after that. Very interesting reading.

Good line of thought, Sin. While I wouldn't expect the FBI to share it's (by now) big secret, what's to stop the Israeli firm from selling the method to other deep pocketed parties, or govt's? More interesting though, if the bungling feds can find a way to get this done, what are the chances more tech-savvy hackers figure it out also? My guess is the geniuses up in Cupertino are in full code-red to conjure up a fix for it.

I agree. I couldn't believe what I was able to find out. The FBI just signed a new contract with this firm in Israel last Friday and today they announce the code has been broken???? Anyway the BBC is the one who broke the story on the form in Israel contacting the FBI early last week and said they were almost sure they had a way (developed software) to break into the phone and sure enough they get a new contract signed with the FBI a few days later.

There is no way the FBI should let others know how they did it. If some other policing agency needs help they can give the phone to the FBI and let them break the code for them and get the info for them.

Good for you Jan this is TRUE. Some nut changed the iCloud password when they first got the phone in California and Apple tried to help them all they could until they found out that happened and the there wasn't much they could do besides write a new code which would have taken them months. Apple could not unlock the phone until writing a new code-however these people from Israel found a way to replicate the chip and mirror it somehow (I have no idea how that works) but yes they could have had all the info they needed and Apple did try and help them the traditional way until the FBI set a new password on the iCloud by accident.

I still suspect the FBI is lying . I don't think they broke that code.

Hey, Sin, did you see where the FBI rendered this phone useless after they accidentally spilled on it.  BWAAAAHHHHHH!  All this fuss and bother about getting the phone unlocked and when they did, they high-fived and carried on and knocked over a glass of water on the phone.  How ironical is this? And yes, I said "ironical". It's my non-word for the day.

Part two-I have done a lot more research and pretty sure they had everything backed up on several computers . They probably did this on purpose to destroy the phone . Who knows -I can't see them admitting to this if it were really true but I give up on those people-they're idiots .

@dianae-that article about the water turned out to be from the news organization "the Onion" which makes up these stories and it was printed in the New Yorker magazine in their satire section ---so it wasn't true .
