There were a lot of protests during the Vietnam war and I guess they finally swayed the politicians to get out of there but there were many other reasons also. That's the only one I can think of that might have done some good. You don't want to hear my personal thoughts about them, so I just stated what I thought could be true.

The civil rights protests, and the Vietnam War protests. I literally grew up watching these on tv.  I was born in 1962 and we watched the evening news as a family and had discussions about such things. And the importance of them.

In my life time.

1. African-Americans Civil Rights of 1960s with Martin Luther King Jr. Some people didn't like him or his freedom rights message but he had an actual purpose.

2.  Vietnam War. I hated the way our returning military was disrepestful for doing the job (War) they didn't start and they selflessly give life and limb😔.

3. Colin. Some people may not like him but he does have a actual purpose.

4. BlackLivesMatter. Some people don't like their message and views, but they have an actual purpose.

5. LGBT. Some people don't like their message, but they have an actual purpose.

6. Affordable Health Care Act. President Barack Obama put into a National Health Care system, no other President could have done. It has problems but all government programs have problems. He had an actual purpose to help all Americans.

Hi Zack,

I was only four years old when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated...but his ahimsa arguably was a turning point in ushering out imperialism.

No apology necessary (ever from you). But independence has a price. My first ever Indian friend (35 years ago) was part of a (very large) organisation who were campaigning to "Bring the British back". Of course, that would never happen. We do understand the way the world works. I've worked (and owned companies) in India. Nice country, nice people. Much worse off as a people since the Brits left. (Sadly that applies to most of the countries that we "granted independence" to.

Hi Ray...a superb BBC series in 1984 based on THE RAJ QUARTET led to my own interest in colonialism/imperialism...in the dynamic of civilization...

If Belgium had stayed in Rwanda, for instance, it's unlikely the 1994 genocide would have taken place.

Personally I am convinced imperialism is not where we humankind would want to be.
But I don't know how to get from here to there.

...and Tim Pigott as he played in that BBC series is perhaps the finest villain I have ever seen.

I think that all protests have a purpose, in that we have the right to stand and be heard. Some might not agree or like the message. Some might feel it a waste of time, but in the end it is a right. Another freedom we are afforded.

Protests that involve hurting people, spitting on people, destroying other people's property, vandalizing businesses or shutting down a freeway are asinine and have no purpose.
