The purpose of colonialism is to;
1. Exploit the natural resources of the colonies.
2. Create new markets for goods in the colonies.
3. Extend their way of life in the colonies.

The purpose was to make money, to put it bluntly. The elites of society, the privileged classes benefited. The peoples of the colonized countries were the most disadvantaged.
