Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC at Pella in Macedonia; he was the son of King Philip of Macedon and Olympia, princess of Epirus. From childhood Alexander showed leadership qualities and when his father was assassinated he ascended to the throne when he was barely twenty years of age. His mother and the Greek philosopher Aristotle whom he revered as his tutor had a deep influence on him in early life.

Alexander is a legendary figure in World history whose dream was to conquer the World; he won many important battles at a young age including one that reasserted Macedonian dominance over the Greek states. His later important achievements were defeating the Persians and spreading his rule in such diverse places as Egypt, Asia Minor, Persia, Central Asia and North Western India. He founded many important cities most of which were named after him as Alexandria, the most famous one being in Egypt. He died in 323 BC due to a drinking bout though according to some sources he was poisoned.
