ISO-9000 is basically the standard for Quality Management Systems and is being maintained by ISO.
The history of ISO 9000 dates back to World War II days (1939-1945), with the UK Ministry of Defense setting up Inspectors to ensure the quality of ammunitions. The United States took its first step towards development of quality standards by developing "Mil-Q-9858" ("Quality Program Requirements"), in 1959, years earlier than the introduction of ISO 9000 in 1987.
It was America's first ever Quality standard, limited to military procurement only. Whereby the Suppliers had to conform to the standards laid down by "Mil-Q-9858", in order to provide Quality Assurance to the Military Buyer.
