The purpose of government is to ensure the maintenance of order, to ensure that justice is administered fairly, to organize in times of emergency (defence issues, shortages etc) and to take care of the weakest citizens. Beyond that, people disagree on the necessity of government. Some feel the responsibility of the state should end with these basic things; others that it should play a bigger role.
