They were able to find out ways to move  successfully  through the difficult terrain. They used animals to help them carry heavy items and built roads into the sides of the mountains to make it easier to get around. They also built irrigation systems so they wouldn't have to walk a far distance to get water and to water there plants that they grew for food. Eventually they became a great empire and ruled most of modern day peru and chile.
