The answer to this question depends on the way you measure a country's intelligence. Do you choose to do it by records of Intelligence Quota tests, which may not be an accurate representation of intelligence? Or perhaps by school leaver's results, which may not lead to prosperity? Do you assume that a high Gross National Profit must be the result of an intelligent population? Or do you look at the proportions of jobs in a country, assuming that a country with a higher concentration of doctors and lawyers must be smarter than one with a higher concentration of garbage truck drivers? Do you bear in mind that migrants may raise the scores in any of these areas?
How do you even define intelligence? Is it street smart, or book smart? There are astrophysicists who don't understand how to catch a bus down town, would you say they are as intelligent as they come?
However you choose to study it, most lists count Japan and China as being the smartest countries in the world. This could be due to their harsher schooling systems, which turn out very well educated pupils at the end of each academic period. It could also be assumed Japan is one of the leading countries in world intelligence to its lead in technology, much of the technology brands we are used to in the western world come from Japan, whilst China are known for meticulously manufacturing components for highly complicated electronics. South Korea also features at the top of most lists; Samsung is their most famous brand. In fact, Samsung is said to make up around one fifth of the country's total exports!
Researcher Robert Lynn orders his top 10 countries by means of average national IQ, taken from IQ tests. His list looks like this:
1 Hong Kong
2 South Korea
3 Japan
4 Taiwan
5 Singapore
6 Austria
7 Germany
8 Italy
9 Netherlands
10 Sweden
There are some notable omissions!
