First make sure the dog is not having trouble breathing. This is one of the biggest problems when something gets caught in the throat. If the dog is wheezing or is taking shallow breaths I would suggest that you call up your vet.
If this is not the problem, then try making it drink water to avoid dehydration. You can give it water in teaspoons so it does not take in too much. Also give it a broth to eat, something made from chicken and rice, which will go down easily.
I would not suggest that you try and remove the irritant yourself, either by inducing vomiting or by other methods, since if this is a sharp object it could cause more problems by getting stuck deeper or hurting the dog's throat. Just be patient and take care of the dog till you can get to a doctor.
