Some people regarded Long as a potential American Hitler. Winston Churchill, for example, on hearing of Long's death, wrote "The Louisiana Dictator has met his fate. 'Sic semper tyrannis' which means so perish all who do the like again. This was the most clownish of the Dictator tribe. Let us hope that more serious tyrants will also lose their sway."

Long's plans for radical redistribution of the country's wealth made the American rich extremely hostile to him. Under his "Share the Wealth" proposals, he intended to provide a guaranteed income for every American household by imposing steeply graduated taxes on the wealthy, taxes which would have risen to 100% at an income of $8 million. This no doubt accounts for some of the deep hostility which was expressed towards him.

Long was not known for any strong prejudice against any group other than perhaps the wealthy though, in his exploration of a possible 1936 bid for the American presidency, he was known to have been involved in talks with figures such as Father Coughlin and Gerald K. Smith who were accused of anti-Semitism.

How rich that demagogic war-monger extraordinaire Churchill - a man who had a creepy homoerotic fetish for "accidentally" exposing himself (not even FDR was spared - in the White House, no less) - would dare to call another politician a "clown".
