Various sources suggest that Senator Mitch Mcconnell's divorce from his first wife Sherrill Redmon was based on grounds of adultery.
It is thought that in 1986, Sherrill engaged in an affair with U.S. Senator Harry Reid. The allegations were not aired until much later in 2011, by which point the dust had most certainly settled on the scandal.
The affair had not only caused a rift between Mcconnell and his wife, but also caused the political dynamic in the senate to quickly go awry. This is said to be the undercurrent that sparked various feuds over legislative decisions in the course of the years that followed the incident.
It is reported that Mcconnell did not find out about the incident until several months later. Whether this was the definitive cause of the divorce can not be verified, however it would certainly be a safe assumption.
I hope this answers your question.
