Should Baltimore Mayor Rawlings-Blake step down? Were her comments about giving the "protesters "space to destroy if they wished" taken out of context like she claims?

I had a quick read through some of the comments that the mayor made. It does seem crazy that she's gone out and said that, knowing how dangerous and volatile the situation in Baltimore has become.

She has claimed that her words were taken out of context though:

"Taken in context, I explained that, in giving peaceful demonstrators room to share their message, unfortunately, those who were seeking to incite violence also had space to operate. And we worked very hard to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate those instances."

She also denounced the violence and damage that was going down too:

"It is idiotic to think that by destroying your city you’re going to make life better for anybody... Too many people have spend generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs who, in a very senseless way, are trying to tear down what so many have fought for."

Maybe she genuinely did get her words mixed up or something. Either way, even though I think she should be held accountable, I'm not sure getting her to resign right now would be helpful.... Maybe after things have settled down again?

Thanks for your insight. I have read and re read her comments and I'm still on the fence about it. She just seems way too defensive about what she has said. I do believe her and the Governor of Maryland walked out on a CNN interview because they didn't like the line of questioning by the journalist. Really??? They are both supposed to be civil servants voted in by the people and they both need to be held accountable for all that has happened in Baltimore. If she is not fired then she should at least issue a public apology for her actions, or lack of I should say regarding this whole unfortunate, sad time in Baltimore's history.
