To us it seems a to be nearly impossible because of all our technology but back then because they never had any they never really noticed how difficult life was and because of that for them it wasn't that bad because it was all they knew. They would use caves as shelter from the weather and wild animals and would use fire to keep warm. I read somewhere that even though they had fire most of their food was eaten raw which caused some stomach problems for them because its harder to digest.
