The anti-poll tax movement is a good example of the success of a pressure group. This movement encouraged people not to pay the tax and the government was finally forced to abolish it in 1991. More specifically, the Saffron Boot House Action Group was successful because it was well organised, had supporters, worked closely with elected representatives and received publicity. The Department for Environment were contacted and the group took part in the decision making process with them.
Another recent example would be the recent success of the anti-hunting lobby in being successful in persuading the government to push through an outright ban on hunting with hounds. The Labour Government went through with a ban as part of their manifesto pledge. Groups like the League Against Cruel Sports have stepped up their campaign now to monitoring hunts across the country to see whether participators are breaking the new laws. They are even considering carrying out civil injunctions against hunters who they see flouting the law.
