Saddam Hussein was executed by the Iraqi government that came to power after his fall and subsequent capture by American forces on 13 December, 2003. Saddam Hussein was a military dictator who was President of Iraq for close to three decades. He ruled Iraq with an iron fist, using fear, torture, and intimidation.                He was a figure who was both loved and hated by the Arabs. Having remained in power from 1979 right up to 2003, he was ousted when forces led by the U.S. Army invaded Iraq.              After his capture, Saddam was tried in an Iraqi court, amidst unprecedented security, for crimes against humanity; specifically, for signing the death warrants of 148 Shi'ites who were suspected of trying to assassinate him. He was found guilty on all counts and convicted. The sentence: Death by hanging. He met an undignified end on 30 December, 2006, when his execution was leaked to the whole world through a grainy video filmed on a cell phone.              Though officially an execution, Saddam's death was a foregone conclusion when he was captured, for he had made too many enemies with his actions, both inside and outside Iraq. For the Shi'ites, it was the logical end to a nightmare. His arrest and subsequent trial and execution has triggered a bloodbath of unimaginable proportions, with the country now hovering on the brink of anarchy and civil war.
