When the men all left to do battle the women moved into the work force to take their places to keep the commerce of America functioning. Women were not allowed to fight in the war but they were allowed to shuttle military flights of materials and fighting men from place to place. It was a dangerous job that the women carried out without the benefit of being able to fight back since they were not allowed to carry a weapon. They did much of the field paper work in the headquarters overseas. Naturally, at that time, most of the nurses were women and they most certainly did their part during the war. Women who had never made major decisions prior to that time became the temporary head of the household during the war and found that they were fully capable of running a home, working and raising the children without a man telling them what to do. Hence, the world views of women were changed forever.

They helped by taking on the jobs men had such as being nurses, pilots, teahcers, etc. Not only that but minorities helped too. African americans, native americans, japanese...

They covered just about everything during the war. Almost all the men were off, fighting the war, so women stepped up to the plate and they hit the ball out of the park! They were doctors, mechanics, lawyers, teachers, business-women, small business owners, etc.

They did just about everything for their countries, and this finally drove the idea that women are equal to men into many's hearts and minds.

The gunsmiths and blacksmiths who were women  made weapons. One group of women got hold of  the statue of George III that had been pulled down by the sons of liberty. They melted it down to make bullets. They cared for injured soldiers.

Mostly, they staffed the factories to produce weapons and ammunition, but there were also lots of medical staff and ambulance drivers.
