Madam CJ Walker was born on December 23 in the year 1867 in Delta, Louisiana. At birth, her name was Sarah Breedlove and she became Madame C. J. Walker only after her third marriage to Charles Joseph Walker, a newspaper man from St. Louis.
She was the founder of Madame C. J. Walker manufacturing company which was in the business of selling hair care products and cosmetics. By the year 1917, her company became the largest business in the United States that was owned by an African-American. And she was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the first American millionaire who was female and self made.
She was of the belief that personal wealth itself is not an end, but it was only tool to expand economic opportunities for have-nots. She became quite famous with her philanthropic work and died in the year 1919.
