The main reason was to continue the exploration which was started by Bartholomew Dias, and that was to find a sea route to India and the east. The overland trip to those regions in order to obtain spices (the silk road) was dangerous and long. Vasco da Gama was successful in reaching India

The reason for exploration was the three G's. God, Glory, and Government (or Gold instead of gov't) What I mean by Government is riches from the gov't for exploring a new place and the gov't wanted them to do it.
