They had discovered that India had and extreme amount of wealth and goods. The British came to India for trade of spices and tea but had discovered the amount of power and wealth this country could give them and therefore their greed had made them determined to colonise the country.
At the time when britishers came to India, India was a self-sufficient country, after Vasco Da Gama(a portugese national) arrived at Calicut on 20.5.1498 trade links between India & Europe started. Europe had nothing so special to offer but many things to gain or take from India. India started its trade relationships beween Dutch, Potugese & French. Portugese traded in Goa & founded 3 colonies in Goa, Diu & Bassein. English Charted the East India Company & started trade with India & soon Conqured India.
The British first came to India and established the East India Company with the permission of the then rulers of the subcontinent. They came for trade purposes but gradually the East India Company gained power and started ruling the area.
Britishers came to India for wealth as India was known as 'golden sparrow'. But mainly they came because they had industries but need raw materials to make the products & also need a market in which they could sell their finished goods.
