Colonization was a mode of expansion adopted by Britishers. They came to India as East India Company, purely a business venture. When they saw that India was the hub of trade activities and was filled with natural resources, They thought about the benefits they would have when they have it as a colony. Thus the East India Company spread its roots here. Then the war of 1857 led way to Complete British colonization.

Britain was looking to expand its empire; India was right there. The richest country in the world at that time, India had many exlusive resources that Britain decided to take advanteage of by conquering. They hoped to export and import goods and services between the two countries.

They saw great benefits in the resources available in India. Also, they recognized the fact that India was a major trade system in the world at that point. This interested the Britains greatly because they thought would become wealthy. While this was true (and happened), the citizens of India were very poor, and not wealthy AT ALL.

Because India was a the richest country in the world for agriculture, natural, raw resources and money. India had almost everything. And Britain just HAD to have it. But after almost a century in 1947 India got its independence and now is the second most greatest country in the world (first being USA, although America is failing economically).

Britishers made their way to India for purpose of trade. India was a country rich in resources at that time and Britishers established themselves there with a company named, "East India Company". This company promoted trade and earned benefits. But soon their focus changed and they started of dreaming of ruling whole India rather than just keeping trade with them. For this, they used, "Divide and Rule" Policy and became successful in ruling over India and started a new era of Mercilessness, Negative Politics in India and ruined Indian resources.
Britishers had to leave India and had to divide India in two countries named India and Pakistan in August 1947 but traces of the culture they promoted in India are still there in Southern India and Eastern Pakistan even after 62 years.

Britain came to India in the search of natural resources which it found abundant in India. Britain took over India by means of entering as East India company in India. They entered in the subcontinent and analyzed the weaknesses of mughal emperors. Britishers were clever enough to take over the land of rich resources in the course of few years. They kept on expanding their territories and their grip on the rich areas. Britishers used this land for the procurement of raw materials at very low prices and selling back the refined finished good products at very high prices. Britain exploited this land for their own trade benefits and for the exploitation of raw materials.

They saw great benefits in gaining money, and also expansion of their country. They just saw it as an open window for resources and wealth, while the people who lived there suffered without much wealth. The british eventually gave up due to mahatmas gandhi.

India in 1700s and 1600s and before was the world's richest nation and really no one was near it! Indian population was in 1700s was about 200 million at that time india was a agriculture based state and old books even says that there was so much money in everyone's house, at that time there was no currency people exchanged normally eatables and by business(they exported eatables to other nations) they earned gold coins and the yield was so good that there was a large demand of indian goods. Some english sorces even says that people had so much gold that they used to weigh it not count it, it was like 200 pounds, 400 pounds etc.
So now you know everyone will want to get india!! At that time, they divided and ruled, britishers even had done wrong works by making a law of it, there was land execution act in which anyone's land can be executed and termed in under british government, there were taxations, you'll not believe there was almost 90% tax rate, means if I get a yield of 100 quintal, I had to give english 90 quintal. There was so much unjustice in all this!

Britain gained empire in India by stepping in through "East India Company". Britishers wanted to take advantage of full resources that India had to offer and for that they used "Divide and Rule" Policy.
East India Company noticed the flaws in Mughal empire system and attacked those flaws. They used the divide and rule policy and also used greed power to weaken the subcontinent system. Last Mughal emperor was already perceived as very lazy with no efficiency and East India Company made sure to get full advantage of that.

The Britain came to India for trading purpose but after some time they came to know that there is no unity in the country, there is no monarchy in the country, all the rulers are fighting together to capture others areas.

They are not focusing on their own area so they started thinking that if  india will be captured by us it will benificial for us because all the things will be in our hand. The spices cotton black paper etc.

India has never been a colony of britain. It was impossible for the britains to colonise india. They just took hold of the political power in partnership with some indian rulers. Then later on they brainwashed indians into thinking that they were inferior. Soon indians thought that britain was doing them a favour by ruling them. This was achieved through decades of brain washing.
