According to statistics released in the year 2005, out of a total of about one billion people in the world who did not have adequate housing facilities, approximately 100 million people were rendered totally homeless. More than half that number, that is approximately more than 50 million completely homeless people, died in the world in the year 2005.

A lot of people pretend to be homeless to avail of benefits from the governments of their countries. A majority of homeless people that live in the Third World countries are not only poor and homeless, but also take to a life of alcoholism, drugs and crime.

A lot of people were rendered homeless due to the devastation of their hometowns by a series of natural disasters. The prominent ones among them were the hurricanes Katrina and Rita and a series of earthquakes in Asia, Africa and the Americas, plus the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
