The answer, and it is quite shocking, is a million, of which half a million are truly homeless, or on the street, and the others are housed in some sort of tempory shelter or squat.
There was recently an article where John Prescott was questioned about this situation, and has said he will release a large investment of cash to aid the homeless.
Of course there are a large numbers of hidden homeless, who are not identifiable, as they sleep rough and are never entered in any kind of help programme.
The numbers have surprised many people, especially since many, comprise entire families, these people are given shelter until benefit housing can be supplied to them.
