By showing us the evolutionary underpinning that binds all humans together.

At one time humans were seen as distinctly culturally derived and cultural anthropologists " discovered " some things about certain humans that the thought divided these people off from the rest of humanity.

By looking for universals that all humans share we see that humans make culture, not culture making humans.

When it comes to human beings, each has a world of their own, and Freud for example, found that there was no universal. However, the geat search for universals continues.
