Should the police be armed with guns? Why do officers in some countries not carry firearms?

Another good question ! Years ago, I would have Yes, they need to have weapons. But I've seen so much abuse and unnecessary killings here in the U.S. That I'm beginning to wonder anymore. It seems to work out in Britain, why not here. Excellent question. Hard to answer because I believe that they should be able to defend themselves but this is getting out of hand here.

That's an interesting question these days.. Especially with all the major scandals about police abusing their power and even killing people.

I think there are always going to be certain circumstances where police will need firearms.

The UK is a pretty good example of how firearms units can be deployed strategically for crimes that warrant their presence, but the average police officer on patrol seems to manage just fine with "non-lethal" weapons such as pepper spray, a baton, or a stun gun/taser.
