The term dominion means the power or right of governing and controlling, there is also a famous place by the same name. In the British Empire as well as in the Commonwealth of Nations, a dominion at present is an overseas province of the British Crown.

The word initially started being used during the development of the British constitutional law. By the 1800's, the word was regularly being used for wholly or independent states of the British Empire, mainly for nations which reached that stage of legal development during the late 19th and the early 20th century.

During the early 20th century, the key dissimilarity between a dominion and self-governing colony was that a domino had accomplished the rank of "nationhood", if not definite political sovereignty, from UK.
