ISIS members are spread all around the world. Your neighbor may be a radical member. They solicit young people from everywhere and convince them to betray their fellow countrymen.

Patton's method works great when the enemy wears a uniform, and will follow the accepted rules of warfare. Here the situation is different. No uniforms, no way to tell who is the enemy.

I think the situation is probably far more complex than we are lead to believe by most of the media we get our information from. Consider that ISIS didn't even exist a few years ago, and yet the Middle East was still a political mess with bombings and casualties on a daily basis. Even the Syrian civil war pre-dates the rise of ISIS.

I think they need to be tackled, I think military intervention is necessary, but I also believe that even if ISIS was wiped out, there are deeper seated problems we don't even understand yet.

US fought Vietnam by the rules of the Geneva Convention where Vietnam didn't s and the DC cut the funding for the war so many of us didn't have supplies to fight loneless win that damn War.  This ISIS war will not be fought by the rules of engagement of the Geneva Convention so this time we will win by total destruction of the enemy

No you cannot fight ISIS using traditional military tactics. You can search and destroy but the collateral damage and deaths will cause more opposition. The so called "ISIS Armies", large groups, should be confronted and dealt with summarily. Smaller armed groups should be neutralized. Even after all that you will have isolated units / cells in most major western countries. The local police and law enforcement authorities would have to step up their game. All in all it would be a protracted struggle which would only succeed with perseverance, support of the people, and minimal political intervention.

While I agree we need to go in and take out the main nest, they are like ants. You kill one nest another will pop up somewhere else. So until we start using social media in the same way they are and/or cut their access to it it is going to be a long drawn out battle.
