The Vietnam war was a conflict riddled in ignominy and dissent, not just from abroad but at home as well. What difference does it really make that a people want to fashion their own destiny in their own way or how they choose to live and what Economic systems they wish to ascribe to. America merely entered Vietnam as a proxy war in order to best their Socialist Soviet rivals. There were considerable losses from all sides and the real victims in this war were the Vietnamese. The major problem with the world is that we choose to exercise restraint and end up with the idea that perhaps our way of life is the better one than what the other nation chooses to have. The freedom of choice applies to everyone and we should respect what another person's own free volition entails them to be. The mistrust and misunderstanding that we breed in the name of liberty and freedom does little good for anyone. America suffered heavy casualties against an insurgency, which was essentially a guerrilla war. Vietnamese people saw America as the aggressor and retaliated as a result. Agreed that it was Russians giving them military aid, ammunition and training but it is also true that hatred against America already existed in the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese, especially given the context of war crimes and excesses that had been committed by America in the name of liberty. Besides that, you can not win a war if your own people are not supporting it. The Americans rose against their government's military jingoism and the country saw the biggest cultural movement against the whole issue of wars. It was not a war that America could have won because the insurgency erupted from personal strife and misfortune of an already weak people.

I think that America lost the Vietnam because they were unable to defeat the Vietcong.
1. Vietcong knew better about the land more then the Americans
2. Even though with better technology, cheap mines and sneak attacks were still affective.
3. Vietnam was backed up by Soviet Union.
4. United State already had a problem with theirselves. (Problem in Kent State)
5. We became interventionism (Support other country who is in need of help) (Not only Vietnam, but we were helping South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Hungary, and Greece)
6. It was costly war
These 6 are probably the main reason why US lost the war. And technically, US forfeited so that would still be US's loss.

As far as I can tell, the Americans seem to be denying that they lost, saying that they pulled out cus it was pointles, in my opinion that is loosing, turning tail and running. That is a sign of weakness. I am doing a History project and need a strait answer but my computer will only get me so far as people are denying losing the war. I just need to know why, I understand that the vietnamese people were amazing at the whole strange way arround conflict, whith their giant Tiger Traps and stuff and that the American people could not fight under the harsh conditions and that it was pointless as the people in America really gave up hope in unneeded war anyway. All this my History Teacher told me. My homework is to find out more reasons. Are there anymore reasons?

America lost the vietnam war because they were just not as committed as the vietcong army was. They were not prepared to die for a country that they did not live in.

America won the Vietnam War because North Vietnam and their allies had 1,177,446 dead soldiers at the end of the war and America and their allies had 315,831 dead soldiers at the end of the war and that is plain and simple why we won.
