It began with France (indochina war 1946-1954) in 1946, and ended with the United States in 1975 with it being called the second indochina war. The United States was not involved in 1959 as a military presence for the procurement of south vietnam. John F Kennedy bluntly stated to the American people during an interview with Walter Cronkite, about the south vietnam.
(CBS Interview, September 2 and 9th 1963); MR. CRONKITE. Mr. President, the only hot war we've got running at the moment is of course the one in Viet-Nam, and we have our difficulties here, quite obviously".
PRESIDENT KENNEDY. I don't think that unless a greater effort is made by the Government to win popular support that the war can be won out there. In the final analysis, it is their war. They are the ones who have to win it or lose it. We can help them, we can give them equipment, we can send our men out there as advisers, but they have to win it—the people of Viet-Nam—against the Communists. We are prepared to continue to assist them, but I don't think that the war can be won unless the people support the effort, and, in my opinion, in the last 2 months the Government has gotten out of touch with the people.
The American presence was to train the military in south vietnam to defend themselves against the communist block in North. By the spring of 1961 US military stationed there had doubled, again to protect americans in a unstable region and to be advisers, not as a military reinforcement for south vietnam. Kennedy was not going to war with the North Vietnam even under pressure from his military advisers. On November 22, 1963, three months after his interview with Mr Cronkite, in Dallas Texas President Kennedy was shot and killed. Lydon baynes Johnson who was swore in during his get away from the crime scene became the 36th president of the United States. After he was sworn in, he reversed every executive order that Kennedy ever instituted, regarding government and the policy towards Vietnam. On August 2nd 1964, and which would be called the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which lead the congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution; the USS Maddox was attacked by two torpedo patrol boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin resolution would give Johnson all legal authority to escalate American involvement in Vietnam. The war according to the history began when two marine battalion's invaded Dagang Vietnam in 1965, to protect Dagang airforce base from further attacks. The war was over on paper in 73, but did not end until the fall of Saigon on April 30th, 1975.
First, it depends on how you define your terms. The Vietnamese fought Japanese occupation from 1940 until 1945, largely under HoChih Minh. Minh was actually under the employ of the OSS during the Japanese occupation. After 1945, Vietnam more or less (the details are complicated) reverted to a French colony. Only problem was that Vietnam did not want to be a colony. The French faced increasing opposition, ultimately facing armed resistance by 1950 (the year many are pointing out here). The French Army fought a resistance movement called the Vietminh, and lost a major battle to the Vietminh at Dienbienphu in 1954. The French, capitalizing on Ho Chih Minh's communism and the Truman Doctrine, requested US assistance. Ultimately, an accord was reached to have country wide elections, but the US ultimately urged the South Vietnamese leadership (Ho's base of power was in the north) and conservative elements in the French supported and created Army of the Republic of Vietnam to back out of the agreement. As a result, by the late 1950's, South Vietnam was ruled by an unpopular president (Diem) and was drawing in more and more US troops as advisers. In 1963, Diem was assassinated by military leaders (US officials were aware of the plot, but stood by and did nothing) in a coup, leaving South Vietnam being ruled by a military oligarchy throughout much of the 1960's. Increasingly, this oligarchy requested more and more aid from a US who was concerned about Mao's takeover in China in 1949 and the Korean War cease fire of 1954.
The sum total of this is that there was no "Pearl Harbor" moment to "begin" the Vietnam War. Like most history, the beginnings are imprecise, messy, and often do not look like a beginning at the time they happen.
The Vietnam War started in the year 1959. The Vietnamese War was one of the most brutal battles ever fought. It lasted for a period of 16 years. It exact date on which ceasefire was called was 30th of April 1959. The war was fought between DRV (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and the 'Republic of Vietnam.' United States of America had allied with the Republic of Vietnam to fight the Vietnam War.
The main reason for the outbreak of the Vietnam War was the failure of the Vietnamese nationalists to attain total control of southern Vietnam. The supporting countries for the Vietnamese communists included the Peoples Republic of China and the Soviet Union (Russia). Whereas the allies for the South Vietnam were New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Philippines, United States of America and Australia.
This was a very brutal war which resulted in many deaths in Vietnam. Even the countries that were supporting the war lost many men to it. However the final result of the war was a peace treaty signed in 1973 stating that the US army move out of Vietnam. The end of the war ultimately resulted in the re-unification of Vietnam.
The involvement of the US began in 1965 until our withdrawal in 1973, but the war ended in1975 after the containment of Saigon (in South Vietnam) by North Vietnam when the South Vietnamese surrendered.

The U.S provided money and weapons in 1954 they did not officially start to help until 1965!!! Then in 1973 the U.S started pulling out troops because more than 58,00 americans were DEAD!!!!! Duh!!!!!!
November 1, 1955 is the date used by the U.S. Department of Defense for inclusion on the Vietnam memorial in Washington D.C. This is the official start of U.S. Combat losses in the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese communists were fighting for independence against the French even before World War II. In fact, U.S. Military advisers were in Vietnam ("French Indochina" at that time) as early as 1932. But the communists in Vietnam, just like the communists in China, stopped fighting anyone except the Japanese until World War II ended. Then in 1945 the communists resumed their struggle against the French. In 1954 General Giap won a great victory against the French army at Dien Bien Fu and the French agreed to peace terms in Geneva. French Indochina was divided into three new countries: North Vietnam, South Vietnam and Cambodia. Of these three, only North Vietnam was to be communist and ruled by Ho Chi Minh with elections to be held in the other two. It took some time for the French to leave. But in 1955, as soon as the French army had left Vietnam, combat "advisers" from the USA were out on patrols with the South Vietnamese helping to find and kill communists in South Vietnam. November 1, 1955 is the date of the earliest comat death of a U.S. Soldier in the Vietnam War.
Lafanne why do Vietnam start from 1945??? It was world war over and start cold war!!! But you right 1959 was america involvement it means start war!!!. Sorry back off my answer diffidently start 1959!
The Vietnamese War started in 1959 abd ended in 1973 During the war there were two sections of troops: Hawks: Wanted to fight and win the war Doves: Wanted to make peace and go home to their families
The US wanted to help Vietnam in the "war" because they wanted to stop the spread of communism. China supported North Vietnam Northern Vietnam sent bands of guerillas, planes, and foot soliders through Cambodia to make a suprise attack on Southern Vietnam.
Northern Vietnamese won because their troops knew the jungles more, plus the troops had the same thing in mind, to conquer and defeat! Some of the Southern Vietnamese were not united in their fight for freedom, some chose to support Northern Vietnam. American troops at the time were not used to such hot jungles and forests, they had a lack of experience with fighting in the jungles, so that why Southern Vietnam lost!
The Vietnam war started in the year 1959 and ended on April 30, 1975. The location of the war was Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This war resulted in North Vietnamese Victory and Communist takeover of South Vietnam and Laos.
Actually the background of the world was as such that the Vietcong, which was the South Vietnamese Communist side fought a guerilla war against the anti-communist forces of the region. The United States entered the war to prevent communist takeover of South Vietnam so they sided with North Vietnam.
The North Vietnamese Army fought a conventional war with the support of the U.S military. The result of the war was Communist takeover of South Vietnam and Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia. It also unified North and South Vietnam.
