Officially,..the American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, with the firing on Fort Sumter off the coast Of South Carolina, by Confederate forces under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard.
The end came on April 9, 1865, with the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of General Robert E Lee. General Lee was the Commander of all Confederate forces, and his Surrender to you. S. Commanding General Ulysses S Grant, effectively ended the Civil War. The war continued for a few months on a small scale, until all forces in the confederacy had been notified of Lee's surrender.
Confederate President Jefferson Davis sought to fight a guerilla war,..but that was short-lived, and he was captured in Georgia, near Milledgeville.
I hope this helps.
