All three cities were the sites of major civil war battles. This turned the tide for the North who eventually won the conflict.

If you are talking about the civil war the significance was that they were populated cities that would help spread the influence of the union and the fall of the confederacy. Also those cities were important also because they were major for dividing the confederacy which was the main goal of the union .
