Cold war refers to the Post World War II situation that involved US and its allies and USSR and its allies. It lasted from 1940-1980. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization and it was established in 1949 as a Military alliance. It did not engage in any military activity during the Cold war. The treaty marked a number of differences between the member states but all in all it secured the position of  the member states. For details see the link below:
