There are a number of differing opinions when it comes to naming the seven wonders of the world. Of the original, Ancient 7 Wonders, only the Great Pyramid of Giza still exists. The other six were:
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  • Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
  • Colossus of Rhodes
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria
  • Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

The current list of the 7 Wonders of the World, according to popular opinion is:
  • The Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Petra
  • The Great Wall of China
  • Christ the Redeemer
  • Machu Picchu
  • Taj Mahal
  • Chichen Itza

These were also the places that were visited by Karl Pilkington in the television series, An Idiot Abroad, which was devised to find out his opinion of the seven wonders of the world. The series didn't actually have much footage of the seven wonders as Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant didn't just send him to see the wonders, but also sent him to different parts of the countries they are in just to annoy him.
Other lists of seven wonders have also been devised; the American newspaper, USA Today, produced the most recent of these. Their list consisted of seven wonders, which were chosen by judges, and an eighth, the Grand Canyon, which was voted for by the general public. The seven wonders as voted for by the judges were:
  • Potala Palace
  • Polar Ice Caps
  • The Internet
  • Mayan ruins
  • The Great Migration of Serengeti and Masai Mara
  • Old City of Jerusalem
  • Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii

Other lists that have been drawn up in a similar vein are the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the Seven Wonders of the Underwater World.
