The rights and responsibilities of a citizen of the United States are defined in the US constitution. It is likely that you want to know the rights and responsibilities for an American citizen because you have just moved or about to move to country and are hoping to gain all the freedoms and opportunities the nation has to offer. In order to benefit from these you have to pursue naturalization to earn the same rights and privileges of citizenship as natural-born Americans. As a naturalized American citizen it is your duty to fulfil these responsibilities and give back to your nation.

The rights of a being a citizen in the United States include the ability to vote in the federal elections such as election for senate or presidency, being able to serve on a jury, travelling to other country with a US passport, running for federal office, having the capability of bringing family members to the country, obtaining citizenship for children born outside of the county and finally becoming eligible for federal grants and scholarship which could help pay your children through college.

The responsibilities that come with these rights of a US citizen include supporting and defending the US constitution, serving the country when required, participating in the democratic process and respecting and obeying the federal, state and local laws. You also have the responsibility to respect the rights, beliefs and opinions of others while still participating in your local community.

The only right or privilege that people moving to the country are unable to take on is that they cannot become president of the United States as all presidents must be natural-born American citizens.
