Magellan was the head of the expedition but he died in Philippines in 1521. Only 18 men (out of 267) commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano returned successfully back to Spain.

Captain Joshua Slocum was the first man to sail around the world alone and completed a passage of 46,000 miles, returning to Newport, Rhode Island on June 27, 1898.

It is also said that Magellan was the first man to sail around the world but he died before finishing the voyage.
