When Lord Rama arrived (came back to) Ayodhya, after defeating Ravana, the inhabitants of Ayodhya celebrated the day ( the day of coming back of Lord Rama to Ayodhya) by lighting the whole City. Although the end of Ravana was also another reason for the celebration, but people of Ayodhya mainly celebrated the day on occasion of being able to see their most loved Lord Rama. This celebration can be described as 'festival of light', and has been
celebrated every year since then, on that particular day in the name of Diwali. Diwali is
also called Deepawali and Deepanvita.
