Mohammad Ansari was elected India's 13th vice president 11 August 2007.
He started as a career diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service. He served as the India's ambassador to UN, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Afghanistan and India's High Commissioner to Australia.
He was also the vice chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, one of country's premiere varsities.
